Bonjour,

Cordialement,
Alain-Gilles Chaussat

Vincent, a Spaniard of noble birth, was a deacon by Bishop Valerius of Saragossa. The Roman magistrate Dacien condemned Vincent to death. Vincent survived many kinds of torture.
This scene conflates two episodes that occurred to Vincent's body after his death. In one, his body was exposed to be eaten by wild beasts, but was guarded by ravens. In the second, Dacien ordered that Vincent's body be thrown into the sea with a millstone is suspended from his neck by a rope.
At the bottom of the panel are waves. above them floats Vincent's naked body with a millstone tied to a rope around his neck. On the body stand a bird (right) and a four-legged creature.
At the top of the panel, a hand of God reached down from a stylized cloud.
The scene is framed by trilobed arch supported by columns. Above are towers, gables, and roofs.

Title of Work: South Choir Clerestory: The St. Vincent Window
Title of Image: Donor: Petrus...and Life of Vincent
Date: 1210-25
Description: Modern: Life of Vincent Window
Deremble-Manhes no. 110A, Delaporte no. 112
The donor scene takes up the bottom two registers of this 10 register window. It is a modern (1921) replacement made after a drawing from the collection of Roger de Gaignières.. At the extreme left is an altar with a cross on it, before which keels an ecclesiastic wearing the vestments of a deacon (amice, alb, and dalmatic). He is identified by an inscription (the second line is modern)
PETRVS BAI
LLART
There has been debate about the identification of this man (Delaporte, p. 457).
Above is a four-panel scene of the body of Vincent found floating in the ocean. Above is single-masted boat with a furled sail. In it sit two men. The one at right, who holds a paddle, has a hood pulled over his head. Both make gestures of astonishment. Below, in the waves, floats the naked body of Vincent (tonsured, haloed) with a millstone tied around his neck.
At the top of the window is another four panel scene of Vincent's body being guarded by a lion and an eagle. At the bottom is body of Vincent, wrapped in a cloth . He is tonsured and haloed. There is a millstone tied around his neck with a rope. Above him stands an eagle facing a lion. At the top of the panel, the hand of God making a gesture of blessing emerges from a cloud.
Delaporte points out the same scene is represented on one of the pillars of the South Porch. The composition is identical but reversed.
7.10 by 2.37 meters
Restored by Gaudin in 1921. He replaced panels destroyed in 1757, most notable the bottom part of the donors' panel.
